CARE FOR STERLING SILVER

CLEANING

Sterling silver flatware is dishwasher safe, but hand washing is generally recommended. Wash with warm water (the heat loosens up any particles that may lead to tarnishing) and a mild soap. Soaps that contain lemon scents or citrus should be avoided.

Can I wash my sterling silver in the dishwasher?

It's always best to keep contact with other metals to a minimum. Even resting your sterling silver flatware in a stainless steel sink could speed up the tarnishing reaction. It's best to wash each piece and rest them on a towel or rubber mat and dry them completely as soon as possible. Left over water spots can also lead to tarnishing.

Especially if your sterling silver flatware has come in contact with vinegar, eggs, mayonnaise, or any citrus juices, it's best to wash the flatware as soon as possible.

STORAGE

It's best to keep your sterling silver flatware in a storage chest, preferably wrapped in a tarnish-resistant material. Restricting your sterling silver's exposure to air will keep it looking fresh and tarnish-free. If a wooden chest is not practical, there are many soft-sided options that do a fine job keeping your sterling silver flatware tarnish-free.

Even if you use your flatware frequently, restricting contact with air and other metals with a good storage option and gentle cleaning will virtually eliminate the need for frequent polishing.
